Hardscape Design Greater Seattle Area

Magnolia Classic & Contemporary

Design problem

Front Yard:  To create a front yard hardscape that works well with the house architecture, create a welcoming entry to the house, add more space for ‘buffering plants’ and people, and make the front yard feel more expansive.

Side yard & Backyard: Create a path to the back yard and a ‘softscape’ that works with the existing patio shape. Change the boxy feel of the back yard lawn area and create a feeling of unity with the existing hardscape. Create a central focal point and block the view of the neighbor to the south.

Design Solution

Front yard:

  1. Design a wall that is both contemporary and classic using plank steel, I-beams and bluestone.

  2. Move the entry steps to the side to create a more experiential path to the front door.

  3. Incorporate the wide parking strip into the front yard hardscape and create a planting plan that creates depth and definition for the front yard.

Side yard & Backyard:

  1.  Use oversized round concrete stepping pads to join the rectilinear side path to the existing curvilinear patio.

  2. Re-shape the lawn to create harmony with the curvilinear patio.

  3. Lushly plant the surrounding beds in multiple layers of shrubs and groundcovers to soften the fence.

  4. Use a tree to create privacy from the neighbor to the south.

  5. Install a water feature in the central planting bed between the garage, main patio and lawn area, for year round viewing.
